The purpose of this blog is to actively engage in local, national, and global issues for further enrichment of intellectual, spiritual, social and cultural selves in a rapidly changing world.
This was a very interesting article. I do believe young people are starting to doubt religion more. Some people do not believe any God would allow bad things to happen. Some people get depressed and can't handle it when a situation doesn't go their way. I do think God is a big factor in everyone's lives. But some people become so dependent that he will answer all of their prayers and help them in any situation. They can't handle it when they have to deal with the situation on their own. God has an effect, but people need to start working for what they earn, rather than think it will be handed to them by God.
I have heard many times that the attendance for churches, mosques, and synagogue has been declining in the United States, as well as the rest of the world. Many people call this a crisis.
However, I feel that many people are still religious, even though they do not go to church. I feel that because we live such a fast paced lifestyle some find they don't have the time to go to church. However, I find that people have other ways to celebrate their faith, especially here at Waynesburg. People attend chapel on Tuesdays, listen to several different speakers, and have Bible studies throughout the week.
I feel as though the younger generations want to have a more modern worship service. Sundays have become too traditional or boring. I think that churches are now trying to create more community and get the younger people to attend church by having lunch after service, or by having different youth group activities. I think that older generations like the traditional services, but the younger generations need something new because they are used to have different kinds of stimulation through technology or activities as they interact with people.
I believe what this article has to say about younger generations losing religion but I also think that there are still a lot of people who worship God in their own ways. Today I feel that not many people have time to go to church on Sundays anymore, but I do not think that should determine whether they are religious or not. Technology I believe is really starting to take over the world and I liked the idea of the turn off your cell phones, and stay away from technology even if just for a day to really be able to appreciate all that we have in life. I think that if people would do this more often, the world would be a lot better off. Since technology is now part of our everyday lives it is really hard to be able to do this, but we should really start to appreciate the little things in life more than complaining about things that do not matter.
We so often hear about the "need" we have for our cell phones, and how now a days they are a crucial part of our every day lives. Most people I know are constantly by their cell phone, and their day is constantly being interrupted by tweets, text messages and facebook posts. We can know everything that is going on in the world through something we can simply hold in our hand. It becoming such a distraction, and for someone to simply put down their phone and draw their eyes to something completely unrelated to it (faith and religion) can be a trying task for most people in our culture in this day and age. I believe that this is sad, and I hate that I see myself succumbing to such a thing as well. It really is starting to take a conscious effort for me, as well as others to set time aside from cell phones and technology in order to focus on our faith.
In a world engulfed by technological satisfaction, the youth of America are searching for this idea of something more; something that will satisfy their appetite for the "good life." I do find it interesting that God is not mentioned in this article, yet the God ordained command of the Sabbath is the focal point. That being said, the Sabbath concept being used is loosely defined. Sabbath was appointed by God as means of reflection and rest in the Lord. One is meant to reflect on how the Lord is using them to bring the kingdom here on earth. Contrarily, the Sabbath mentioned here is seen more as spiritual, than biblical. Young people are seeking out a time to be free of distractions and connect with family and friends. I love this idea, but I don't feel it will provide remedy to the the dissatisfaction that people are experiencing. Without the contentedness of God, the Sabbath will bring about rest, but it won't bring about peace.
In today's society, technology runs our lives. It's becoming more common to have a smart phone which means you're always connected to every social network out there. It's also becoming more common to live our friendships through technology. I think the younger generation is finally realizing the drain that is happening from always being connected. They are searching for a way to disconnect to relax and be with the people around them. Even if they aren't observing the religious sabbath, they are still practicing something similar to it.
In this article it states that we are in a depression. Because of that, this is why so many people are starting to turn towards religion. Not only that, but now in society it is easy to get any information at the tip of your fingers in second. People are using technology to keep in touch with friends, but at the same time it is easy to use if for religion. For example I can download Bibles onto my Iphone and gain access to them anytime I need. Technology is making it so that people do not have to go to church but in fact they can sit in their pj's at home and watch the sermon for the day.
